Wood processing, timber storage and pending deliveries !!

With a slow start to the week due the continued rubbish weather production soon ramped up as the week went on. Firstly we had three pleached purple beech dropped of to us alongside the staking kit ready to be planted tomorrow (Friday). These where sourced for a new customer to us to replace three existing trees that had unfortunately died. We are looking forward to see the finished result and photos will follow in due course.

Now focusing on the firewood side we had plenty going on this week, here at Japonica we have multiple firewood processing machines for different sizes of timber. This week we have been predominantly using our Posch cut master for the small pieces that do not require splitting and then our Posch spaltfix-375 for the small to medium size pieces the require 2/4 or 8 way splitting. Please see the photo of the cut master and also a video of the 375 in action.

Finally onto one of the most challenging jobs in the firewood side is working out which way is best to store certain species of wood. This week we have had a large amount of green (unseasoned) Beech to process, Beech is a rather dense hardwood which carries a very high moisture content therefore making it slightly more difficult to season over other species such as Ash. Due to it being so green we opted to put this wood into IBC cages and stack in one of the open fronted barns allowing vast amount of air flow, preventing moulding and increasing the rate at which this wood will dry out. This is just the start of the preparation for the next firewood season meaning this wood will be left throughout the summer to naturally dry, creating 'ready to burn' firewood in September.

Thankyou for taking the time to read a brief insight as to what we have been doing this week and as we have said previously we now aim to do these 'blog' posts every Thursday. Best wishes the Japonica team.
